Bhopal Travel Guide: Best Places to Visit, Food, Lakes & Things to Do

12 min read Updated August 2026 Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh

Bhopal gets treated as a stopover on the way to Sanchi more often than it gets treated as a destination, which undersells it. The city is built around two lakes, splits cleanly into an old city and a new city with very different characters, and has enough food and museums to fill two full days before you even leave for a day trip.

The Lakes

The Upper Lake (Bada Talab) and Lower Lake (Chhota Talab) are what give Bhopal its "City of Lakes" name, and they're genuinely central to how the city is laid out rather than an afterthought park. The Upper Lake is the larger of the two and the better one for boating and sunset views from the boat club; the Lower Lake, smaller and closer to the old city, is more of a walking and people-watching spot along its edges. Van Vihar National Park sits right beside the Upper Lake - a walk-through zoo and rescue centre that works well combined with a lake visit on the same afternoon.

Old City vs New City

The Old City, on the Lower Lake's side, is where Bhopal's Nawabi-era history is most visible - narrow lanes, the Taj-ul-Masajid (one of India's largest mosques), Chowk Bazaar, and the Sadar Manzil and Moti Masjid nearby. The New City, spread around the Upper Lake, is where the state secretariat, most hotels, and the newer museums sit. Visitors usually base themselves in the New City and treat the Old City as a half-day walking trip rather than a place to stay.

Quick Tip

Visit Taj-ul-Masajid outside prayer times if you want to walk through unhurried, and dress modestly regardless of when you go - it's a functioning mosque, not a monument.

Museums & Culture

  • Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya - an open-air museum of tribal and folk life from across India, spread across landscaped grounds rather than indoor halls.
  • State Museum - sculpture, archaeology and manuscripts spanning the region's history, a useful primer before visiting Sanchi or Bhimbetka.
  • Bharat Bhavan - a arts centre combining a museum, theatre and gallery space, active with events beyond just static exhibits.
  • Regional Science Centre - hands-on exhibits, a reasonable half-day option if travelling with children.

What to Eat

Bhopal's food identity runs on two tracks - a strong vegetarian street-food culture and a distinct Nawabi non-vegetarian tradition, and both are worth seeking out rather than picking one. Poha topped with jalebi is the default breakfast pairing across the city, sold from carts well before most restaurants open. Chatori Gali, in the old city, is the after-dark street food strip most locals point visitors toward. Bhopali kebabs and biryani, reflecting the city's Nawabi cooking, are the non-vegetarian side worth trying if that fits your diet.

Dish When to Have It Where
Poha-jalebi Breakfast Street carts across the old and new city
Bhopali kebabs Evening Old city eateries near Chowk Bazaar
Chatori Gali street food Night Old city
Bhopali biryani Lunch or dinner Old city and New Market
"Bhopal doesn't announce itself the way Khajuraho or Kanha do. It rewards the visitor who gives it a full day instead of a layover."

Day Trips from Bhopal

  • Sanchi (-45 minutes) - the Great Stupa and Buddhist monuments, an easy half-day round trip.
  • Bhimbetka Rock Shelters (-45 minutes) - prehistoric rock art in a UNESCO-listed cluster, combinable with Sanchi in one long day if you start early.
  • Bhojpur (-30 minutes) - an unfinished 11th-century Shiva temple with one of the largest lingams in India, often paired with Bhimbetka.

A Simple 2-Day Plan

  • Day 1: Old city walk - Taj-ul-Masajid, Chowk Bazaar, Sadar Manzil - then Upper Lake in the evening for boating and sunset.
  • Day 2: Sanchi and Bhimbetka as a combined day trip, back in Bhopal by evening for Chatori Gali.

If you have a third day, swap in the museums (Manav Sangrahalaya and State Museum) and Van Vihar in place of rushing the day trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

2 days covers the city itself comfortably - the lakes, old city, and main museums. Add a third day if you want Sanchi and Bhimbetka as day trips rather than rushing both into one day.

Both - the city has enough on its own (lakes, old city markets, museums) for a 2-day stay, and it also works as the base for Sanchi and Bhimbetka, both under 90 minutes away.

Bhopal's street food scene centres on Chatori Gali and the old city - poha-jalebi as a breakfast pairing, Bhopali kebabs and biryani reflecting the city's Nawabi-era cooking, and a strong non-vegetarian tradition alongside the vegetarian street food.
