Madhya Pradesh is the undisputed heart of India's tiger country. Three of the nation's best reserves Kanha, Bandhavgarh, and Pench - sit within a comfortable drive of one another, each with its own forest character, sighting odds, and jungle lore. Here's how to plan a safari trip across all three without wasting a single game drive.

Why These Three Parks, Together

Bandhavgarh is famous for having one of the highest tiger densities in India, thanks to its compact core zones and dramatic hilltop fort rising above the forest. Kanha is the classic sal-and-meadow landscape that partly inspired Kipling's Jungle Book, and it's the park that brought the rare hard-ground barasingha back from the edge of extinction. Pench, mostly teak forest rather than sal, sees far fewer tourists, so you'll often have long stretches of the reserve to yourself even while tiger numbers there keep climbing.

Strung together on a single trip, the three parks give you contrast rather than repetition: dense core-zone drama at Bandhavgarh, open-meadow grandeur at Kanha, and quiet teak-forest tracking at Pench.

Best Time to Visit

The safari season runs October to June. Winter (October–February) is the most comfortable for game drives, with cool mornings and pleasant afternoons, though tigers can be harder to spot in the thick winter foliage. The summer months of April to June typically bring the best sightings, as animals congregate around shrinking waterholes - the heat is intense, but the payoff in visibility is real.

Most Madhya Pradesh national parks close for the monsoon from 1 July to 30 September (exact dates can shift slightly year to year), so plan outside that window.

Zone-Wise Booking Tips

Bandhavgarh

The reserve is split into the Tala, Magdhi, and Khitauli zones at its core, spread across the Vindhya hills. Tala is the most famous for sightings and the most competitive to book - reserve it as early as your dates allow.

Kanha

Safaris run through four core zones - Kisli, Mukki, Kanha, and Sarhi. Kisli and Mukki carry the strongest reputation for tiger sightings. Kisli and Kanha zones are best reached via the Khatia gate; Mukki zone is accessed from the Mukki gate on the reserve's southern side.

Pench

Most of Pench's tigers are on the Madhya Pradesh side of the reserve, reached most easily through the Turia gate. Because footfall is lower here, this is a good zone to slow down and watch the forest rather than chase a checklist.

What Else You'll See

Tigers headline the trip, but the supporting cast is just as memorable: leopards, sloth bears, Indian wild dogs (dhole), gaur, chital and sambar deer, and Kanha's signature hard-ground barasingha, a swamp deer subspecies found nowhere else on earth. Birdlife is rich across all three reserves, from raptors to kingfishers along the streams.

Planning a Multi-Park Route

A comfortable circuit covers Bandhavgarh, Kanha, and Pench over 6–7 days, with two nights and two safaris (morning and afternoon) at each park, plus drive days between them. Jabalpur is the usual air/rail gateway for Bandhavgarh and Kanha; Nagpur works well as an entry or exit point for Pench.
